Alfred Maleson passed away on September 24th. Alfred was one of the first people to participate in my "Weather You Remember" project. Alfred was intelligent, witty, and told his stories with exuburance.
Almost a year after recording him, I invited him to the Mills Gallery in Boston to see the piece, and possibly participate in an informal talk I was giving about the work. I never heard back and assumed that he had forgotten about it, or just lost interest. The night of the talk he arrived at the gallery, sat in the front row, and eagerly answered questions. He was full of charm and humor, and endeared himself to everyone. It amazed me that at the age of 84 (and walking with a cane), he had driven himself into Boston's South End, found a parking spot, and was actually interested in the gallery and the developments of the work.
About 4 months later I saw him for the last time. I was getting ready to move to Indiana, and I was doing some shopping at the Trader Joes in Brookline. We walked out of the store together and we talked for a while in the parking lot while I unlocked my bike. Alfred was interested in my old Ralleigh bicycle, and was telling me about how he used to enjoy riding his bike through Boston. Then he said "I knew there was a reason I liked you." With that, I watched him walk to his car. I knew that I might never see him again, and I knew that I would never forget him.
